The Divas do Fado BOOK4CD® is a book produced by Difference intended to underline the Importance of the Woman in Fado Music.
For a better understanding the Divas do Fado concept, it should be noticed that these women always had a significant number of fans who followed them wherever they went. This Phenomenon happened until the 1970s, particularly in Fado Houses where they gleamed and delighted the audience. The same is repeated nowadays.
In Fado, that is a popular song, the concept fits and cannot be embraced with haughtiness or with remoteness, by the contrary.
Fado is one of the most intimate music genres, where each artist in their own way, presents with typical clothing, excelling by closeness, delighting us with the emotion carried by their voice. For all these reasons we entitled this work "Divas do Fado".
At a time when preparing the Fado application to Intangible Heritage of Humanity, is crucial to distinguish its protagonists.
The Female voices, though time, have played a primordial role in the affirmation of Fado in the World.
This work has the support of the Museu do Fado and gathers 72 songs from 36 artists of all generations, where each one participates with two songs. It brings together some of the most emblematic voices ever, rediscovering others as well, almost forgotten by the voracity of time. It also includes some of most important artists of the last decades, but not forgetting, the emerging values. Some of which make their debut here exclusively, and who claim more and more as successors of the Saudade legacy.
Divas do Fado presents this deluxe edition, in a hardbound full colour book with contemporary design, including four discs where the oldest recordings were carefully restored and the mastering of all the songs is made in HD audio quality at 24 bits/96KHz.
In these four discs, is made a travel through time of saudade and timeless saudade, gathering each disc nine artists.
CD1: The Present of “Saudade”: This disc has some of the most stands out artists that most have emphasized in the last decades. Each one at its own style (more or less traditional), have been vital in the renewal of Fado and performing usually in sold out venues, bringing Fado and the Portuguese culture to new audiences around the world. We can hear here on premiere, two Fados of Ana Laíns that will be part of her second album "Quatro Caminhos". We also have 2 new songs of Ana Sofia Varela returning to the recordings with "Fados de Amor e Pecado".
CD2: The Future of “Saudade”: This is the album of hope, there's room for a confirmation of the new talent and also for the discovery of new voices, since some of these make their absolute debut here. Perhaps this was the well deserved opportunity that they needed to show themselves to the public. A promising generation that grabs the world with both hands and exudes in each pore the good health that Fado breathes. On this album debuts 4 new singers: Claudia Leal, Ruth Soares, Ana Marta and Claudia Madur.
CD3: The Past of “Saudade”: This CD allows distinguishing some of the most important artists of the twentieth century whose legacy, in some cases, extends the new century. Names full of history that made Fado their lives, winning the applause on stages where they passed, causing the overwhelming of many admirers across borders. Here we can find some treasures almost lost in the vast catalogue of Valentim de Carvalho like Fernanda Peres, Teresa Silva Carvalho or Helena Tavares.
CD4: The Eternal “Saudade”: This album pays tribute to the great singers of all time, including the biggest of all divas – Amália Rodrigues.
They have been an inexhaustible source of never ending inspiration for all generations of artists. The pioneering and daring in which they gave their lives to the Portuguese greatest song, left the mark of Portugal present in the world until the present day. They spread their perfume over the audiences rendered to their charms and conquered crowds. Among other great names of Fado, Fernanda Maria, Berta Cardoso, Lucilia do Carmo or Maria Alice are part of this “Saudade”. We celebrate as well the 50th anniversary of Maria da Fé career.
In this book where the Woman is the centre of all things, there is a narrative made by the journalists Nuno Lopes and Manuel Halpern from “Severa” to a future generation. Covers various topics of importance related to Women in Fado. From a distant past that to a timeless future that reveals promising. This book contains as well biographical notes of the artists and is accompanied by images.
Not by forgoteness but for reasons beyond our will and due to the limitation of space itself, we could not include all the artists we wanted. Still, we present here a representative cast of the feminine side of Fado, making time bridges that allow us to better understand the phenomenon of Women in Fado.
